Two Days Tour # 3First DayAfter having picked you up at your hotel, we will drive with the Hummer to the Ulfarsfell mountain, near Reykjavik, from which you will have a magnificent panoramic view of Reykjavik and the Faxafloi bay. You will experience right away the enormous climbing ability of the Hummer. The drive will take us to the Thingvellir national park, where the first settlers began holding their yearly parliamentary sessions in 930, surrounded by the splendid scenery. The water-filled earth fissures in Thingvellir are a visible sign of the fact that the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are drifting apart from one another and Iceland at the speed of 3cm per year. After visiting this historical place, we will drive to the geothermal area of Haukadalur, home of the famous Geysir and its still active brother Strokur, which catapults it hot water fountain into the sky every four minutes. After a coffee break, we will drive to Gullfloss, Iceland's most beautiful waterfall, whose mass of water falls down on two different levels for 32 meters, deep into a canyon. We will then drive over the highland road Kjölur; from there we will take a detour through the mountains and the valleys of the Kerlingarfjöll, where you can collect black obsidian in the still steaming valleys and drive on to Hveravellir along the Langjökull glacier. One should not pass up the opportunity of taking a bath in one of the warm brooks of the vast sulphur vapour area and its hot steaming springs. We will drive through secluded landscapes before arriving in Blönduos, where we will have dinner and spend the night in a countryside hotel. Second DayAfter breakfast, we will drive in the direction of Varmahlith and further on to Glaumbaer, a grass-covered farm from the 18th century, which has been converted into a museum, giving a good insight into how Icelanders lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Also, before the farm was turned into a museum, it was for a long time the residence of prominent people. We will drive on to the fishing village of Saudarkrokur, from which one can see the rocky island Drangey. For those of you who know the Grettir saga, this is where the outlaw Grettir lived. From Saudarkrokur, we will cross Skagaheidi through Norduradalur and arrive in Blönduos once again. After a coffee break, we will drive all the way to the top of the Vatnsnes peninsula, where, after a small walk, we will be able to observe, at close range, the seal colonies, which enjoy the sunrays from small rocks in the sea. After driving through the highland pass Holtavördurheidi, past the volcanic cone Baula and through moss-grown lava fields, we will finally reach Borgarnes. There we will take a coffee break and rest our weary feet, before returning to Reykjavik. |
